Walter Hanke

November 15, 1918 — September 5, 2008

Walter F. Hanke, 89, of Wausau passed away on Friday, September 5, 2008 at his home under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Service.



He was born November 15, 1918 in Wausau to the late Charles and Clara (Machael) Hanke. After graduating from Wausau Senior High School , Walter worked at Curtiss Co. He later worked for Juneau Auto Supply and then was custodian at St. Stephen Lutheran Church for over 20 years. Walter was a natural at ice and roller skating. He met Evangeline Hickman at the Northside Roller Rink and it was love at first sight. Married at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, they celebrated 66 years together on June 6 th . Walter had excellent wood working skills. He and his father built Walter and Vangie’s home where they have lived for 59 years. They enjoyed traveling and also going to different dance halls listening and dancing to Polka music. In his younger years, Walter played fast pitch baseball as well as team manager. He bowled, played hockey, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.



Survivors include Vangie of Wausau, three children, Walter G. (Delpha) Hanke of University Park, Fl., Judith Schmidt of Greeenfield, and Daniel C. Hanke of Irma, 9 grandchildren, Daniel C. Hanke, Sandra (Frank) Molina, Tristan Schmidt, Ian (Michelle) Schmidt, Sabrina Schmidt, Sydney (Chad) Sizemore, Destiny Hanke, Dan Hanke, Serena Hanke, 5 great grandchildren, Xander, Felicity, Alexis, Hana, Alexander, sister-in-law, Phyllis Hanke of Eagle River and many nieces and nephews.



Walter was preceded in death by his brother, Charles, and his sister, Hazel Fitzgerald.
