Veryl Arlene Holmes, 84, of Woodbury Minnesota passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at Regions Hospital, St. Paul, MN.
She was born June 18, 1939, to Reno and Else (Luchterhand) Herdrich at their home in the Town of Beaver near Loyal, WI. After graduating from Loyal High School, Veryl attended Nursing School at Hamlin University in MN. On February 13, 1965, she married Richard Holmes at Trinity Lutheran Church in Loyal, WI. After spending their first year in Redding CA, Veryl and Dick returned to Wisconsin. They eventually moved to Wausau where Veryl continued working as a nurse. Over her career, Veryl worked in Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Orthopedics, Home Care and Public Health. She also worked in medical and psych units and as a special diagnostic nurse in X-ray and the heart catheter lab. She received her Associate of Science degree in Nursing in 1987 and a bachelor's degree in nursing in 1988. She enjoyed working with families, especially children.
Veryl was a member of St Mark's Lutheran Church along with her husband. She enjoyed attending bible studies, greeting folks at services and lending a hand in other areas. In her spare time, Veryl enjoyed sewing, gardening, traveling, camping, playing cribbage and dancing with her husband. She loved her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and their friends.
Survivors include her three daughters, Karen (Bradley) Leitzke of Sheboygan Falls, WI, Kimberly (Stephen) Johnson of Norman, OK, and Kristi (Andrew) Grall of Woodbury, MN; seven grandchildren: Daniel, Jonathan (Andrea) & Timothy Leitzke, Rachel & Sam Johnson, Joshua & Maison Grall. Veryl is further survived by one sister, Margaret Zimmerman of Marshfield, WI, two sisters in law: Joan Seaborg of VA and Janice Herdrich of CA, and many nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her husband, two brothers, and one sister.
Funeral services will be at 11:30, Saturday, August 10, 2024, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Wausau, WI. Reverend Bruce Lamont will officiate. Burial to follow at a later time in Greenwood Cemetery in Tomahawk, WI. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 until the time of service at St. Mark's.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family so that donations will be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation and other worthy causes.
