Thomas Birt

Thomas W. Birt, 90, of Wausau passed away Thursday January 17, 2019. He was born June 15, 1928 to Herbert E. and Lucy F. (Franke) Birt. He married Virginia G. Eschenbach on September 10, 1949, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Wausau.

Thomas graduated from Wausau High School in 1945 and served in the Navy Reserve. He started his driving career with Lotz Sand & Gravel, ran Webb Gas Station and started City Delivery. In 1959, he started working for Montgomery Ward as a semi driver for 26 ½ years. He was rewarded with commendations for safe driving, service pins for each year of accident free driving, and two trophies for his outstanding safety record.  Thomas and Virginia also liked to travel in their trailer home, eventually crossing their way north, south, east and west through the US. They also enjoyed dancing together, and in his younger days he enjoyed doing the calling at square dances.  He was a life member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, and 6 years at St Armands Lutheran Church in Sarasota, FL. He ushered and sang in the choir in his earlier years. Tom loved all the good things life offered him!

Survivors include his wife Virginia, and son Jerome J. (Debra Thorne) Birt, three precious grandsons Phillip (Meghan), Ted (Carrie), Xander, great grandchildren Ottava, Lincoln, Evelyn, and Coen, brother Floyd Birt, and sisters Faye Schwarm, and Judith (Jim) Kasten.

He was preceded by his parents, sister-in-law Marion Birt, and brother-in-law Lester Schwarm.

Funeral Services will be Saturday January 26, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 1300 Townline Road, Wausau. Pastor Dave Wetmore will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park at a later date. Friends may sign the family guest book at helke.com
