Carol Marie Smith, age 89, of Wausau, passed away peacefully and entered her heavenly rest on Sunday, October 25, 2026, in Wausau, Wisconsin.
Carol was born on December 22, 1936, in the town of Wien, Wisconsin, to Otto and Emma (Trierweiler) Borchardt. She was raised in Wausau and carried with her throughout her life the values of faith, family, hard work, and compassion for others.
A lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Carol's faith was the foundation of her life. For more than 30 years, she faithfully taught Sunday School, helping generations of children grow in their Christian faith. She was also an active member of the Ladies Aid, sang in the church choir, and dedicated countless hours volunteering for Dime and Dollar. Her church family held a special place in her heart, and she found great joy in serving her congregation and community.
Carol worked for many years at Schuette's Building Center before later joining CW Paper, where she remained until her retirement. She also served as a board member of Brokaw Credit Union. Throughout her life, Carol was known for her generosity, warm smile, and willingness to help others. She was especially proud to be a godmother to at least five Godchildren, cherishing each relationship and taking seriously the role faith entrusted to her.
She was immensely proud of her husband Lawrence, in that he designed the iconic Pudgy Duck boats that became a well known feature of what is now known as Rookery View Park. Carol also enjoyed spending time at Emma Krumbee's restaurant during its years in Wausau, where she was a familiar face and frequent guest.
Above all else, Carol treasured her family. Her nieces and nephews brought her endless joy, and she never missed an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments, offer support, or simply spend time together. Her love for family was evident in everything she did, and the memories she created with them will be cherished forever.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Smith Jr.; her parents, Otto and Emma (Trierweiler) Borchardt; two sisters, LaVila Borchardt and Nancy Smith; two brothers, Elroy Borchardt and Gordon Borchardt, and Gordon's wife, Lois Borchardt; and her great-nephew, Steven Borchardt.
She is lovingly survived by two nieces, Laura (Keith) Brandt and Linda Dvorak; four nephews, Buck (Marcia) Borchardt, Butch Borchardt, Dave (Kathy) Smith, and John Smith; great-nephews and great-nieces, Josh Borchardt, Kane Borchardt, Travis (Jean) Brandt, Cory Brandt, Amanda Brandt, Jared Brandt, and Garrett Dvorak; along with many cherished great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit at Aspirus Wausau Hospital for the tremendous compassion, dignity, and exceptional care they provided to Carol during her final days. Their kindness and support will never be forgotten.
