Wallace Oelke

Wallace Oelke of the town of Rib Mountain passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital at the age of 86.

He was born September 27, 1921 in the town of Berlin to the late Albert and Louise (Wilde) Oelke. On September 6, 1947, Wally married Joyce Aschbrenner at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Wausau. Wally began his career as a branch manager for Athens Co-op, Hamburg mill. In 1964, he and Joyce moved to Marion where Wally owned Marion Feed and Grain. After selling the mill in 1973, they moved to Marathon where Wally was a carpenter for Buchberger Builders. In his free time, Wally enjoyed hunting deer and elk as well as fishing year round for Walleye and Perch. He especially loved his annual fishing trips to Otter Tail Lake, MN. An active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Marathon since 1974, he had been on the church council, building and grounds committee, cemetery board, treasurer, and usher.

Survivors include his wife Joyce of Rib Mountain, one son, Jerome (Janice) Oelke of Merrill, 3 grandchildren, Jordan, Joel, and Julia, one sister, Marjorie Fromm of Marathon, a niece, Karen (Scott) Mann, and six nephews, Allen (Mary) Oelke, Rick (Mary Ann) Oelke, Ronald (Myrt) Woelfle, Richard (Joan) Woelfle, Robert Fromm, and Eric (Julie) Fromm. Wally was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn (William) Woelfle, four brothers, Harvey (Violet), Norman (Verna), Ralph and Myron, and a brother-in-law, Herb Fromm Jr.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 1, 2008 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Marathon. Reverend Jon Hadler will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Helke Funeral Home and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
