Sylvia Dettmering

February 9, 1923 — December 12, 2008



Sylvia Dettmering was an energetic woman who was known for her wonderful sense of humor and quick wit. Whether it was motorcycle riding with her husband, George, golfing, snowmobiling or partying with friends, Sylvia always had a good time. Her and her family enjoyed spending time together at their cottage on Pier Lake . Sylvia loved to fish off the dock as well as going four wheeling or jet skiing with her grandsons. She had a special talent for crocheting Afghans, making rosettes and the perfect Peppernuts.



At the age of 85, Sylvia passed away on Friday, December 12, 2008 at Harbor House in Merrill.



She was born February 9, 1923 in the town of Texas to the late Herman and Sara (Goebel) Krueger. She was raised on the family farm until she met George Dettmering at a wedding dance. They married on September 14, 1940 at Trinity Lutheran Church , Wausau and recently celebrated their 68 th wedding anniversary. After working at Kraft Cheese for several years, George and Sylvia moved to Wittenberg where they owned Dettmering Jewelers for 34 years retiring in 1982. While living in Wittenberg , Sylvia also took local floral orders for weddings and funerals, served on the Welcome Wagon Committee and attended St. Paul ’s Lutheran Church . After moving to Wausau , they became members of Christ Lutheran Church and were a “Security Couple” at Kannenberg Plaza for 20 years. Sylvia and George made many friends there and were active in the Bible study group.



Survivors include George of Merrill, one daughter, Cheryl (Rodney) Couillard of Merrill, 4 grandchildren, Michelle (David) Tichinel of Clintonville, Jodi Pike of Green Bay, Chris (Jessica) Bargender of Wausau, Jeff Bargender of Rothschild, and 4 great grandchildren, Adam and Cody Zuehl and Amy and Selena Tichinel all of Clintonville. Sylvia was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Pike, a sister, Dorothy Sturm, and two brothers, Elmer and Wesley Krueger.



Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. , Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau . Reverend Joel Danner will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park . Visitation will be Tuesday from Noon until the time of services at the funeral home. You may sign our family guest book at helke.com.
