Sterling Anderson

May 30, 1922 — February 10, 2009

Sterling L. Anderson, 86, died peacefully at Capitol Lakes Retirement Center in Madison Wisconsin.


Sterling (Andy) was Minister of Music at the First Presbyterian Church in Wausau for 35 years and provided musical leadership for the entire community. He founded the women’s vocal ensemble Wausau ProMusica, was active in the Community Concerts organization, and was a driving force behind what would later become the Performing Arts Foundation. For many years, Sterling was director of the Wausau Community Chorus. He was active in the Wisconsin River Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, serving as Dean for several years. Sterling and his wife Loretta were referred to as the Wausau area’s Mr. and Mrs. Music during their induction into the Central Wisconsin Music Hall of Fame in 2004. He was an active member of the Wausau Noon Kiwanis Club and Kiwanis Club of Downtown Madison.


For the last 8 years Sterling has resided in Madison at the Meriter Retirement Center now know as Capitol Lakes, where he played the piano and the organ for the residents at hymn sings and Sunday night Vespers.


Sterling is survived by his two children, Susan Anderson (Tom Ashenbrenner) of East Dubuque, IL and Peter Anderson (Sara Minkoff) and two granddaughters, Hanna and Emma Minkoff from Madison, WI. He was preceded in death by his wife (Loretta).


A memorial service honoring Sterling’s life will be held in the near future. Information about memorial gifts will be available at that time.
