Mary Walters

October 17, 1942 — January 9, 2010

Mary Ellen Walters (Baumann), 67, of Wausau, peacefully passed away at Wausau Manor, on Saturday, January 9th, in the arms of her husband with family by her side after a gallant and dignified 30 year struggle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Mary was born to Louis and Erna (Zirbel) Baumann on October 17th, 1942 in the Town of Wein. She graduated from Edgar High School and married her childhood sweetheart and love of her life, Doug Walters on September 1st, 1962. Mary attended UW Stevens Point and college in MN, earning her degree in computer punch operation. Mary started her career at Wausau Insurance until the birth of her children and resumed her career at Ripco Credit Union in Rhinelander until MS prematurely ended her career. In addition, Mary was an accomplished organist serving her Lord at various churches in Edgar, Wausau and Rhinelander. Mary was a tireless, caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed traveling with her family, cooking and baking, creating various arts and crafts and was a talented seamstress. In addition, she was an avid sports fan of her kids and grandkids as well as college and professional. Her true pride and joy was always having special baked treats ready whenever the grandkids were home.

Mary is survived by her husband of 47 years, Doug, their children: Brad and wife, Jane and their children, Alexandria and Benjamin of Belleville, WI. Daughter, Lisa Swan and husband, Rob and their son, Kyle of Wausau. Son, Keith and wife, Tammy and their children Marcus and Cole of Florida.

Mary is further survived by her sisters, Delores Ringle of Missouri and LouAnn Miles of Edgar; brothers and sister-in-law, Frank and Judy Walters, Gary and Betty Walters, Ron (and fiancé Julie) Walters all of Wausau, Greg Walters of Mayville and many nephews and nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her parents, her mother and father-in-law, Frank and Mildred Walters; her brother-in-law, Elmer Ringle and sister-in-law, Carol Walters and niece, Cindy Niklinski.

The family cannot thank enough, Bonnie Laessig, Sue Sheils and her special “sister” Betty Walters for their constant care and unconditional love. Additional thanks go to the staff of the Wausau Hospice and Wausau Manor and her very special nurses and caretakers.

Mary is donating her body tissue for further medical/forensic study to the MS Society, in the hope that one day we may see the end of this hideous disease and make sure that she had not endured all the years in vain.
