Jean Straub

April 15, 1922 — May 13, 2009

Jean Ann Straub, 87, Wausau, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Marywood Convalescent Center under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice.

Jean was born April 15, 1922 in Wausau to the late Jesse and Esther (Madden) Clark. That same year she was baptized at St. Mary’s where the family were members. She was a 1941 graduate of Wausau High School and went on to St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1943.

Her first job as a registered nurse was in Chippewa Falls as a staff nurse in Obstetrics from 1943-44. Jean then returned to Wausau in 1944 and became head nurse on the surgical floor at St. Mary’s Hospital. During this time she met and fell in love with Howard “Bud” Straub and the couple was united in matrimony on May 29th, 1946 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. To this union were born Jamie, Jay, Susan, Christopher, Sally, and Debbie. Sadly, Sally passed away three months after her birth. The Straub family was once again stricken with grief when on October 21, 1957 Bud was killed in a car accident leaving Jean to raise five young children. In order to take care of her family, Jean returned to nursing working for the Wausau Visiting Nurse Association for 11 years. She then transitioned into the position of occupational health nurse for Wausau Paper Mills Co. in Brokaw caring for approximately 750 employees. In 1977, Jean made her final career move to Mount View Care Center and later retired in 1987 after a combined 30 years of nursing to countless numbers of Marathon County residents.

Retirement brought a much deserved time for herself; Jean enjoyed gardening, reading, playing bridge, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and volunteering in the community. She especially enjoyed her time at the Talent Shop.

Jean is survived by her loving children, Jamie J. (Peter) Larsen of Palatine, IL, Howard J. (Linda) Straub of Fort Atkinson, Susan (James) Powers of Wausau, Christopher B. (Linda) Straub of Wausau, and Mary “Debbie” (Michael) Darwish of Taylor, MI; 11 grandchildren, Peder, Kirk, Jason, Emily, David, Aaron, Michael, Laura, Matthew, Katy, and James; 7 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Scarlett, Forrest, Quinn, Ashley, Tessa, and Calvin; and nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Gwen Kolbeck and Dorothy Kimball.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be said for Jean on Monday, May 18, 2009 at 12:00 PM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Wausau. Father William Grevatch will be officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM until the time of services at 12:00 PM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Wausau on Monday. There will be a private family burial at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Jean’s shining light may have been extinguished, but the light in those who she has touched and cared for over the years lives on.
