Janet Huebner

November 30, 1925 — April 13, 2013

Janet R. Huebner, age 87, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Aspirus Hospice House under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services with her daughter and son-in-law at her bedside. Jan was born on November 30, 1925, in Wausau, daughter of Janet Schlegel Reinhold and Walter H. Reinhold.

Jan grew up and graduated from Wausau High School in 1944. In 1948, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a B.S. Degree in medical technology, interning that year at the University Hospital in Madison. From 1948 - 1958, she worked at the former Memorial Hospital in Wausau as chief medical technologist. During that time she also helped organize the Marathon County Blood Bank. After the Blood Bank became operational in 1952, Jan worked there for six years until her daughter was born. Jan resumed her career at the Blood Bank in 1963, and worked there until 1979, first as a staff technologist, and later as supervisor of the Blood Bank. From 1980 - 1989, Jan owned her own mobile paramedical business, conducting examinations on prospective life insurance clients. Jan retired in 1989.

Jan's professional affiliations include being an emeritus member of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science. She was also an emeritus member of the Wisconsin Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, and served as treasurer and a member of the board of directors of that society. Jan served as former president of the Central Wisconsin Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and was an emeritus member. She was a registered medical technologist and belonged to the American Society for Clinical Pathologists.

She was a charter member of Elkettes, a 50-year honorary member of the American Association of University Women (A.A.U.W.), member of the Wausau Hospital Volunteers, member of the Wausau Country Club, and belonged to Alpha Xi Delta social sorority.

Jan was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school for many years, was a member of the Love/Hope Circle and the United Methodist Women. Jan served on various committees of the church over the years, including Board of Trustees, and Finance, being chair of the latter at one time. She previously served as usherette for church services and coordinated the United Methodist Women's pre-owned sales.

Jan loved to golf. At age 86, when Jan's health no longer allowed her to play the game, she was the longest-tenured golf member at the Wausau Country Club. She enjoyed playing bridge, attended Badger football games, and for many years looked forward to annual vacations to the Hawaiian islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai, "The Big Island," and Molokai.

She is survived by her daughter Suzanne M.(Robert B.) Gebhardt of Wausau; step-grandsons Eric (fiancée, Jessica Mulholland) and David Gebhardt, all of Shorewood, Wisconsin; and two cousins, Pat (Graydon "Pete") Peterson of Wausau, and Guy (Marlene) Schlegel of Athens, Wisconsin.

Thank you to the entire staff at Renaissance Assisted Living, Weston, Wisconsin, who tirelessly cared for Jan during the past year in which she resided at the facility. Jan was also blessed with wonderful, compassionate care from the staff and volunteers of the Comfort Care and Hospice Services' team during her final days. The family also extends its gratitude to other numerous medical professionals and disciplines associated with Aspirus that have been involved in Jan's medical care over the years.
