Harland E. "Harley" Walters, 94, Mosinee, passed away Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 at St. Clare's Hospital, Weston after several years of suffering from dementia with Lewy Body Disease.

Harley was born June 18, 1914 in Schofield, the son of Richard C. and Maude L. (Lillie) Walters.  He graduated from Schofield Elementary School in 1928.  He was trained in mechanical drafting at Wausau Vocational School in 1931-1936.

He served during World War II in the South Pacific, the Phillipines and Korea as an infantryman in the U. S. Army 1943-1945.

On February 8, 1944, Harley married Betty Voigt of Wausau at Camp Wolters, Mineral Wells, Tx.  They were divorced in 1951.  He married Martha Reed January 28, 1956 in Schofield.

Harley was employed at Murray Machinery, first in the machine shop and then as a draftsman retiring in 1976 after 37 years of employment.

He was a man of many passions including planting trees, making maple syrup, learning the Spanish language, gardening, fishing, target shooting, ice skating, roller skating and dancing.  He taught roller skating locally at the Riverside Roller Rink at Rothschild Pavilion and also at High Roller Skating Rink for many years as well as rinks in nearby towns such as Plainfield and Wisconsin Rapids.  He especially enjoyed teaching and talking with the young children.  He was a Charter Member of both the ice skating club in Stevens Point and the Timberline Skating Club in Wausau.

Harley designed and built several machines in his spare time, among them a chicken plucker, a peasheller, a tree planter, snow plows, a large snow blower, a floatboat, a wood splitter and a floating bridge.

His pride and joy was the pond he constructed on his property during his retirement.

He was a fun-loving, devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.  He loved telling jokes and making people smile.

Harley is survived by his wife of 52 years, a daughter, Pamela (Terry) Loveland, Stratford, two grandchildren, Erica (Jeff) Weinfurter, Appleton and Kathy (Justin) Fischer, Clintonville; one sister-in-law, Marguerite Walters of Springfield, Va and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Chester, Norman, Clarence, Russell and Harris and two sisters, Lou Vorwalske and Emmy Vorwalske.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Helke Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 302 Spruce Street, Wausau.  Entombment will follow at Memorial Chapel Mausoleum at Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau.  Visitation will be at Helke Funeral Home on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services.

The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to Kennedy Park Rehabilitation and Medical Center for all the loving care, assistance and compassion given Harley and his family during these last three weeks.
