Gregory Martens

July 20, 1937 — June 20, 2009

Gregory W. Martens was a quiet, unassuming man who had a wonderful appreciation for the outdoors. He was never more comfortable than when he was in the woods hunting deer or small game. But his passion was fishing for Walleye on the Wisconsin River and Turtle Flambeau Flowage in Mercer. He was also a devoted fan of the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers.

At the age of 71, Greg passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at home surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with lung disease.

He was born July 20, 1937 in Milwaukee to the late Walter and Adeline (Klima) Martens. On September 12, 1959, Greg married Angela Machajewski in Milwaukee. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Greg managed several Milwaukee area restaurants. In 1978, Greg and Angie purchased North 3rd Avenue Sport Shop in Wausau and ran that until March of this year.

Survivors include Angie, daughter, Robin (Rico) Martens-Jaeger, son, Jeffrey (Jenne) Martens, five grandchildren, Ryan, Daniel, Anastasia, Alyssa and Isabella, all of Wausau and one brother, Gary (Dorothy) Martens, Gile, WI.

Services will be 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 26, 2009 at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. Full military honors will be conducted by American Legion Montgomery Plant Post #10.

On behalf of Greg, we would like to thank all of the customers who over the 30 plus years patronized the sporting goods and bait shop and shared their stories with him. Greg loved the business, loved his customers and kept the business open until his health would no longer allow him to.
