Euince Cohodas

d. February 28, 2010

Eunice Cohodas of Wausau passed away early Sunday morning, February 28, 2010, at St. Clare's Hospital after complications from a broken hip.

Eunice was born in Manitowoc, WI to the late Joseph and Lena (Pasetsky) Stein, Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Eunice's parents owned a grocery/general store in Seymour, WI, where she grew up with her beloved older brother, Melvin. She and Melvin helped their parents run their business throughout their youth. In high school, Eunice developed an interest in singing and performed regularly with a local big band as well as having the lead role in all of her high school operettas. Following high school, she pursued a career in singing and made a contract with a local radio station to sing on the air, but she was unable to fulfill it due to severe illness.

Following her graduation, her parents moved the family to Neenah, where they opened The People's Fruit Market. Eunice worked in the store and then met Morris Cohodas, who distributed fruit to her family's store. The two were married in 1945. Morris worked for a business owned by his family, Cohodas Brothers, known in Wisconsin as Cohodas-Paoli or Wisconsin Distributing Company. Not long after being married, the couple moved to Wausau as Morris was assigned to manage the central Wisconsin distribution warehouse. Eunice assisted her husband in running the business while also working as a homemaker. They had a daughter, Lois, born in 1947.

She was a member of Mount Sinai Congregation for many years, where she had been active in the temple Sisterhood. Eunice was also a passionate and competitive golfer and bowler in local leagues for many years and she won numerous trophies and accolades in both sports. She also was very interested in playing cards and other games such as mahjong, which she played with a regular group for many years. In more recent years, she became very involved in the local Duplicate Bridge league, where she made many friends. She participated regularly in tournaments and achieved the rank of Life Master.

She was a very loving mother and grandmother, as well as a good friend to many in the community. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lena Stein, her brother Melvin Stein, and her husband Morris, who passed away in 1985. She is survived by her close and loving family consisting of her daughter Lois Cohen, grandson David Cohen, son-in-law Sydney Cohen, all of Wausau, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will take place on Tuesday at 1:30 pm at Mount Sinai Synagogue, 910 West Randolph, Wausau. Rabbi Dan Danson will be officiating. A funeral and burial will then take place on Wednesday at 12:30 pm at Montefiore Cemetery in Marinette, WI where she will be buried next to her beloved husband.
