Elmer Wolslegel

July 12, 1918 — March 30, 2009

Elmer Wolslegel was a kind, caring man who always helped anyone in need. He was a “man of the land” taking great pride in sharing the flowers and vegetables he grew with friends and neighbors. His specialty was growing pumpkins, corn, strawberries, Gladiolas, and Zinnias. Elmer was also a man of faith, who supported his church and was a former trustee at St. Stephen Lutheran.


At the age of 90, Elmer passed away Monday, March 30, 2009 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.


He was born July 12, 1918 in the town of Stettin to the late Herman and Minnie (Schulz) Wolslegel. Growing up, Elmer helped his family farm in the town of Stettin. On Septemeber 26, 1942 he married Ruth Paul at St. Stephen Lutheran Church. They farmed in the town of Stettin where Elmer was a town board supervisor and school board member. He began working in the maintenance department at M&I First American National Bank, Wausau until his retirement.


Elmer and Ruth enjoyed playing cards, especially Sheepshead, going to different music concerts, traveling on bus tours, and participating in Lion’s Club meetings and events. Elmer had been an active member and a Melvin Jones Fellow Recipient with the Monarch Lion’s Club where he helped raise funds through Christmas wreath sales and the Wisconsin Valley Fair.


Survivors include his children, Janice (Roger) Baerenwald of Marion, Robert (Carol) Wolslegel of DePere, James (Cindy) Wolslegel of Fargo, ND, Phyllis (Clifford) Grohn of Eau Claire, Lois Hilger of Appleton, 8 grandchildren, Dean (Lisa) Baerenwald, Joy (Dan) Fritz, Kelly (Scott) Suda, Andrew, Beth, and Ryan Wolslegel, Stephen and Ellen Hilger, 5 great grandchildren, Brandon, Ryan, Morgan, Zach, and Sam, and special friend, Ruth Becker of Wausau. Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth and two brothers, Arnold and Edward.


Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Wausau. Reverend Gary Froseth will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Helke Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
