Dorothy Hamers

Dorothy M. Hamers, 95, Wausau, died Friday, March 7, 2008 at the Hospice House under the care of Aspiruse Comfort Care and Hospice.



Dorothy was born on February 22, 1913 in Wausau to the late August and Selma (Plautz) Borth. She grew up in Wausau and graduated from Wausau Senior High School. On July 29, 1939, Dorothy was united in marriage to Orville John Hamers. The loving couple spent 59 years together prior to Orville's death on June 12, 1999.



Dorothy was a very strong woman, never afraid to speak her mind and approached life with a take charge attitude. She took very good care of her family, cooking delicious meals and baking wonderful pies and bread from scratch. Dorothy and Orville always took care a huge garden in which they would grow several varieties of beans, tomatoes, onions, carrots, and rhubarb, all of which Dorothy would can along with making homemade jams and jellies. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting and needlepoint. One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards in several card clubs, especially bridge. Dorothy and Orville were members of the Elks, enjoying many dinners and bowling with fellow members. After her son graduated from college, Dorothy became the secretary for the Wisconsin Valley Fair, a position she held for many years.



Dorothy was a lifetime member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Wausau. She was baptized, confirmed, and later married all at St. Stephen. Dorothy was a very active member of the St. Stephen Guild.



Dorothy is survived by her son, Joel (Jacqueline) Hamers of Dyer, IN; brother, Gerhard (Ione) Borth of Wausau; brother-in-law, Pete Hamers of Pittsville; and many more extended family.



Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Pastor Ken Schaub will be officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Thursday at the funeral home and last until the time of service at 11:00. Burial will follow the funeral service at Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau.
